Montessori method as is known today is the brainchild of Maria Montessori. The first woman to graduate from the University of Rome medical school in Italy. She became interested in education through her work as a doctor working with children with special education needs.

Having recorded astounding success with the children with special needs, Maria Montessori sought an opportunity to apply the same method with children in regular schools. When the opportunity presented itself in the form of a project by a housing estate owner requesting for her services in keeping the disadvantaged children of working parents meaningfully engaged while their parents are at work, she grabbed this opportunity and thus began her journey into the field of education. Montessori approached the education of these children as a scientist and used her classroom as her laboratory for observing the children thus helping them maximize their potential. Montessori established several schools for the less privileged and continued her work with children until she died.

More than hundred years down the line, the Montessori movement has spread not only to every continent of the world laying a solid foundation for the future of the child, but also helping adults discover their calling.

What is more, the method is still as relevant today as it was at the beginning. This is because the Montessori Method is based on child development principles and recognizes three main principles in the education of the child.

  1. That the child has an innate desire to learn and an absorbent mind which functions as its greatest capacity within the first six years of life (The Child).
  2. That the child needs the guidance of a professionally trained adult who will allow him express himself within a free and ordered environment (The Teacher).

  3. That the child requires an enabling environment which is furnished with appropriate materials to aid the development of the child physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially (The Prepared Environment).

     

 

 

A proper Montessori classroom reflects beauty, exudes peace and at the same time fosters meaningful activity within it. It is an environment specially prepared for the child, in it he’s at peace with himself and has all that he needs for his environment through the wide range of materials from which he can freely choose. It is a multi-age grouped environment which fosters socialization, leadership and responsibility and the teacher, who is the facilitator of his classroom, open the door to knowledge for the child and allows the child to enter and be active in the environment.
